SnoWatch: Blue River Watershed

Watershed:format for printing

The Blue River watershed drains about 599 square miles above Green Mountain Reservoir, located south of Kremmling. In an average year, the Blue River watershed produces about 364,000 acre-feet of water. About 70% of the production (261,000 acre-feet) occurs during the peak snowmelt months of April through July.

The Blue River watershed provides water to Green Mountain Reservoir, which provides compensatory storage to West Slope water users for water diverted to the East Slope via the Colorado-Big Thompson Project. The Blue River also supplies water to Dillon Reservoir, owned by Denver Water.

Our SnoWatch system displays year-to-date snow accumulation for three SNOTELs in the Blue River watershed. Fremont Pass is located in the southern part of the watershed, and Grizzly Peak is located on the eastern edge of the watershed. Both of these are high-elevation sites. Summit Ranch, a middle-elevation site, is located in the center of the watershed.
